Ellis-Park-Stadium, JohannesburgCapacity: 60000 (after modification)Built in: 1982
Ellis-Park was built in 1928 as a rugby stadium.
It was demolished in 1982 and built up again, just for rugby games.
The stadium was named after J.D. Ellis, the city council of Johannesburg,
who approved the utilization of the ground for the stadium.
The final of the Rugby World Cup 1995 took place at Ellis-Park.The stadium also experienced unforgatable soccer games. In 1995 South Africa played against Argentina 1:1 and in 2000 they played 0:0 against France, which was a big prosperity for soccer in S.A. At the moment the premier league club Orlando Pirates FC plays their home games in the Ellis-Park. In 1995 they won as the first South African team the club championscup of the African Football Association. The Nelson Mandela Team also played at Ellis-Park against a world team, when Mandela said goodbye. The South African stars Kalusha Bwalya, Mark Fish, Lucas Radebe and Tijani Babangida honoured, together with world stars like Rigobert Song, Carlos Dunga, Luis Hernandez and Claudio Suarez, Nelson Mandela, one of the biggest statesman ever. The modification of Ellis-Park is quite marginal so it will be used for FIFA Confederation Cup in 2009.
